According to a report released by Politico, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein (the man responsible for the appointment of Robert Mueller to investigate “collusion” between Russia and the Trump campaign) and FBI Director Chris Wray, paid Speaker of the House Paul Ryan a surprise visit this afternoon.

It is believed the “visit” stems from an investigation related to political corruption within the agency itself headed up by House intelligence committee Chairman Devin Nunes of California (Nunes was recently cleared of ethics charges made by Democratic partisan Adam Schiff and others) and specifically a request for a document related to the now discredited “Russian Dossier” which the FBI has refused to turn over.

Nunes is investigating the relationship between the agency and the Fusion Group who put together the information contained in the dossier which was paid for by the Clinton campaign. Nunes has threatened a contempt resolution against Rosenstein and Director Wray if they continue to stonewall the investigation.

This begs a number of questions not the least of which is the reasoning behind their lack of cooperation. If it’s due to a potential conflict with the Mueller investigation why haven’t they simply made that case? If true it would quickly resolve the matter. To date they have failed to do so. The fact that they showed up at the Speaker’s office on short notice certainly gives the appearance of strong arm tactics in an attempt to shut the investigation down.

The legislative branch is the direct representative of the American people. It is more than concerning that what appears to be a rogue and unelected group from the executive branch appears to be interfering with the legitimate concerns of the people’s representatives. Moreover, it strengthens the President’s argument that elements within the justice department are attempting to delegitimize and overturn the results of the 2016 election.

The media has made the case that the Nunes investigation would result in a lack of confidence in the justice department and specifically the FBI. The truth is it is the behavior of these agencies pre and post-election that are responsible. As a result, many Americans are left wondering whether or not we are witnessing the start of a “Banana Republic.”
